Course Description
This course prepares students to understand economic activities and challenges of individuals and families, the role of business in society, procedures in a successful job search, data management for decision making, and best practices for harvesting customer needs. The course also prepares students to understand business development, responsibilities and information, conservation of business and human resources, and apply procedures for managing a start-up business. English language arts and mathematics are reinforced.
Class Rules/Disciplinary Policy
Students are expected to behave maturely and appropriately. Conferences will be scheduled for students unable to comply with school/county policies. Our rules are Be Respectful and Be Prepared.
Tardy Policy
Students are expected to be seated and ready to begin when the bell rings. We have a tardy system in place through our Intervention office. The intervention office determines the consequences - not me. The consequences are as follows:
- After the 3rd tardy a warning will be sent to the parent/guardian.
- After the 4th tardy lunch detention will be assigned.
- After the 7th tardy a disciplinary referral will be assigned as well as ISS.
Grading System: Computers will be used extensively for the majority of assignments. Grading will consist of classwork, participation, project(s), and test grades each grading period under a total points grading scheme. Updated grades will be posted at regular intervals. Participation/contribution grades from classwork, and/or daily and assessments by engagement in conversion will also be determining a student’s average. Homework is rarely assigned, but unfinished classwork automatically becomes homework. Because this is a CTE course there are no senior exemptions.Progress reports will be sent home every 3 weeks.
Having a PowerSchools account to keep current with your grade and assignments is strongly advised!
Final Grade = 1st 9 weeks average (40%) + 2nd 9 weeks average (40%) + CTE Exam (20%)
A=90-100 B=80-89 C=70-79 D=60-69 F=below 60
Make-up Work
Students should immediately check Canvas for any work assignments that were done that day. Copies of paper assignments will be kept in the classroom for the students, but it is their responsibility to pick it up and complete it. Students should take the initiative to set up an appointment with Ms. Smith during lunch or after school for help or to make up a quiz or test when returning to school. It is the student’s responsibility to mark in Canvas if the student was absent and the date so late points are not deducted.
Deadlines
One of the most difficult lessons for some students to learn is that they must meet assignment deadlines. Assignments that are turned in late will have 5 points deducted from the earned grade per day (8 calendar days) for a maximum of 40 points. The maximum grade attainable shall be a 60 after a late submission. Missing work reflected on a progress report must be turned in by the next progress report for a late grade (this does not apply at the end of the quarter) Progress Reports will be available every 3 weeks.
Supplies/Books
There is no text book for this class. All materials are found online or provided in class. Each student should maintain a folder (physical/virtual), but are expected to bring the following day to class EVERYDAY: pens and/or pencils, your laptop, a positive attitude, and the previous day’s work completed.
There is more detailed information on Canvas where you will also find a calendar set up with dates for units and tests. Also, modules in Canvas stay on pace with the course of study. Remember to check there often, as we will be working here on a daily basis.
