Course Syllabus
C. Molina
Course Objective:
This course provides students with additional opportunities to expand their listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills as they create with the Japanese language. Students will initiate and maintain face-to-face communication using the Japanese language. They will identify main ideas and significant details in discussions, presentations, and written texts within a Japanese context.
They continue to refine their knowledge and understanding of the target language and cultures and their own by examining the interrelationship of other cultures to their own, by demonstrating behaviors appropriate in target cultures, and by applying their knowledge and skills inside and outside of the classroom setting. The following skills will be our primary focus:
- Receptive Skills(Interpretive= Reading & Listening):
Students will be able to comprehend basic communicative texts and audio.
- Productive Skills(Presentations= Written & Spoken):
Students will be able to recognize and produce Japanese written forms.
- Interactive Skills (Interpersonal= Conversation):
Students will be able to utilize social registers and Japanese cultural norms to communicate in limited daily situations
- Cultural:
Culture will be embedded throughout all of the skills.

2. Online Rules:
- Attendance will be taken daily.
- Cameras ON will be requested unless otherwise discussed with the teacher.
- Assignments have due dates, please ensure that they are submitted on time. Late Assignments will be subjected to a penalty(10 points per day). MUST complete LATE SUBMISSION FORM: https://forms.gle/nahYs1yxQdoGbCow7
- Modules and new assignments will be posted/published on Fridays for the upcoming week.
- If you have any questions, comments, issues, or concerns, please contact me asap through Talking Points, Google Form, or Email.
- Please be familiar with Best Practices for Video Meetings.
- During all video meetings, forums, discussions, exchanges, and posting, all WCPSS rules & regulations apply. Please do not post or submit anything that would violate.

3. Classroom Rules:
- Absolutely no sleeping or dozing at any time.
- Before entering the classroom, verification that you have completed the Health Screening is necessary.
- Be on time for class, seated in your seat, and prepared to begin.(There are incentives for perfect attendance and no tardies per quarter.)
- Treat others how you would like to be treated. Respect classmates and the teacher at all times.
- You must participate in all activities. You cannot pick and choose what activities you will participate in.
- Respect the environment and the items in the classroom as if they were yours that you purchased in Japan.
- Cell Phones will be used at my discretion, please do not use cell phones during instructional time.
- TATAMI MAT Seating Area: Please do not step or walk on the Tatami Mats with shoes. No eating/drinking is allowed in this seating area. Please do not drag anything (even lap desks) across the mats.
- ZAISU(Tatami Mat Chairs): Please do not rock in the chairs or play with the incline/decline positions. Not following the rules will revoke your privilege.

5. Homework:
It is very important that homework is completed each time it is assigned. The homework will usually be used in the class the following day, therefore it cannot be submitted late, unless you are absent. Don’t get behind!!! 6. Absences:
Assignments and homework due on the date of your absence will be due immediately upon your return. You will be responsible to contact me or your classmates to find out what was covered in class. Tests and quizzes that are announced in advance will be taken on the day of your return. Tests and quizzes that are unannounced will be your responsibility to schedule an appointment with me to make up the test/quiz (within 1 week). Absences are notated in the gradebook as A, this indicates that you can submit the work however, if you do not submit the work, it is equivalent to a Zero.
***Tardy Policy---Applicable to Classroom & Google Meets Sessions:
If you are arriving past the start time, please POLITELY interrupt in Japanese to announce your arrival. In Japanese, please say: Excuse Me, This is Your Name, I am late, Sorry. Ensure that you are acknowledged by by the teacher. This must be completed in order to alter your absence status. Not doing so will prevent your attendance from being altered.
7. Testing:
Students scoring below a 80% on a test or major project will have the opportunity to complete a re-test or additional supplemental assignments. Students can earn a maximum score of 80% after completing the grade-recovery activity.
8. Grading:
- Major(50%): Test/Presentations/Projects
