Skill focus for unit one:

Reading:

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.11-12.1

Use quotations and specific details from texts to support theories about specific truths the text reveals about the human condition.

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.11-12.2

Identify two or more truths about the human condition within texts and describe how the truths are revealed through the plot and how they build on each other within a work. .

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.11-12.4

Define words and phrases using their contexts, making sure to identify literal as well as deeper symbolic meanings and their relationship to the deeper truths expressed in a work.

Writing:

Reading:

Analyze how an author's choices concerning how to structure a text (e.g., the choice of where to begin or end a story, the choice to provide a comedic or tragic resolution) contribute to its overall structure and meaning as well as its aesthetic impact.

Demonstrate knowledge of key works of literature, including how two or more texts from the same period treat similar themes or topics.

Write arguments to support claims about important topics, using valid reasoning and relevant and sufficient evidence from texts

Search effectively for reliable print and digital sources and assess the strengths and limitations of each source regarding the research question.  Gather relevant information to  integrate into a single document, maintaining the flow of ideas, balancing the information from disparate sources, citing said information correctly in order to avoid plagiarism.

Integrate multiple sources presented in diverse formats in order solve problems, evaluating the credibility and accuracy of each source and noting any discrepancies among the data.
