Course Description: PERSONAL FINANCE BF052X0 1 credit Prerequisite: None
This course prepares students to understand economic activities and challenges of individuals and families, the role of lifestyle goals in education and career choices, procedures in a successful job search, financial forms used in independent living, and shopping options and practices for meeting consumer needs. The course also prepares students to understand consumer rights, responsibilities, and information, protect personal and family resources, and apply procedures for managing personal finances. English language arts and mathematics are reinforced. Work-based learning strategies appropriate for this course include mentorship, school-based enterprise, service learning, and job shadowing. Apprenticeship and cooperative education are not available for this course. DECA (an association for Marketing Education students), Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) and Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) competitive events, community service, and leadership activities provide the opportunity to apply essential standards and workplace readiness skills through authentic experiences

Assignments: I will be using Canvas in my classroom on a daily basis. Canvas provides a safe and easy way for my class to connect and collaborate, share content, and access assignments and grades via the Internet. All students are expected to complete assignments in Knowledge Matters, Learn AES and Budget Challenge. Course standard review and testing will be in Schoolnet.
Grading: Your grades will be posted in Canvas and Gradebook Pro weekly.
Late Assignments:
Work that is submitted after the due date will be penalized, but not by more than 10% per day, with a maximum deduction of 40% of original credit.
Make-Up Work Policy:
Any student who misses a class due to an absence is expected to make-up missed assignments. The student is responsible for getting the missed assignments from the teacher and scheduling times to make-up tests.
Classroom Expectations & Procedures:
This is a business class so we will treat it like a business. Non-negotiable and Start-on-Time procedures also apply as classroom rules.
- Be Prompt – Be on time and ready to begin class when the bell rings. Please make every effort to make it to class on time.
- Be Prepared – Have your materials with you and ready for class every day. Keep your notes and activity sheets in an organized format in your notebook.
- Be Respectful – At no time will profanity be accepted in Ms. Merritt’s class. It is rude and disrespectful. You should always show respect towards your teachers and classmates. Maintaining a peaceful environment is a must in this class.
- Assignments will be posted on the board every day. It is important that you check the board as soon as you arrive.
- We will begin classwork promptly and you should not disturb others while you work. (This is a sign of respect.)
- No food or drink is allowed in the classroom per school rules. This is for the safety and cleanliness of our computers and classroom.
- The classroom printer should only be used to print assignments for your Marketing I/ SEM I class.
- Remain in the classroom until the bell rings.
Classroom Computer Use:
- Computers are requirement for this course. It is a privilege to have them therefore we must use them in accordance with school rules.
- If you finish your assignments, before the period ends you may continue to use the computer at the direction of the teacher.
- Please review the WCPSS Acceptable Use Policy guidelines and sign and return before the student can complete work in this course.
