Chemical Changes
When a chemical change occurs, new and different substances are formed. The substances that existed before the chemical change are called reactants and the substances that are formed after the change are called products. Another name for a chemical change is a chemical reaction.
Evidence that a chemical reaction has occurred can often be seen by a change in the characteristics of the substances that were involved in the reaction.
There are 3 main indicators of a chemical reaction:
1. If a gas is produced, that is a good indication that a chemical reaction has occurred. A gas may be observed by seeing bubbles or detecting an odor.
2. If two substances are mixed and a color change occurs, that may be an indication that a chemical change has occurred.
3. A third sign that a chemical reaction has occurred is if two liquids (or two dissolved solutions) are mixed and a solid, known as a precipitate forms. At first the solid may look cloudy, but given time, it will settle out of solution.
