In this activity, you will be introduced to a “puzzle piece” model to predict ionic compound formulas.

Part 1: Use a simulation to explore how opposite charges attract leads to an ionic compound.

Part 2: Rule of Zero charge
Students see 3 examples of puzzle pieces representing common ions (with points and dents representing valence electrons), and how they “fit together” to show the rule of zero charge to write formula and name.

Part 3: Guided practice part 1
3 scaffolded problems where students copy/paste and move puzzle pieces IN THE GOOGLE DOC.

Part 4: Guided practice part 2
Students choose their own pairs of metal/non-metal and complete 3 problems.

Part 5: Guided practice part 3
Students use only the periodic table and rule of zero charge to predict 3 additional compounds of their own choice.
