In this unit of study, you will focus on investigating the ways authors develop themes and use language to impact meaning. You will also be investigating concepts of home & family as illustrated in the anchor text Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare. In supplements connected to the anchor, you will have an opportunity to reflect on the ways parents, friends, and environments affect teen development and look at the ways teen love can introduce conflicts in adolescent life.

You will perform a close-reading analysis of a passage of the play and complete a cold-read of a supplemental text to show your mastery of the reading standards. You will have an opportunity to expand your writing by learning how to write a narrative.

Over the course of the unit, you will build knowledge around:

Shakespeare and one of his most widely read tragedies
Adolescent love and relationships
The psychology of parenting and parental influence
Current scholarship on teen relationships

What connections exist between home and family?
What defines a home? What influences how we define a home? How does the concept of home differ from a structure?
What defines a family? What influences how we define a family?
How are ideas of home and family both biological and psychological?
