In this unit of study, students will analyze the author's tone and how the author’s word choice has a cumulative impact on tone. Students will also review the standards previously covered during units this semester. This final unit can be used as evidence of mastery, a cumulative unit for students’ skills.

As a culmination of their studies, students will be able to analyze the author’s tone in a given passage in a cold read of a passage, analyze how Paul’s character has developed over the novel, or demonstrate mastery of several standards previously taught by creating a digital portfolio with entries analyzing theme, character, tone, cultural point of view, and other skills learned this semester. One option for the mid-unit assessment has students begin the work assembling the digital portfolio that can be completed for the end of unit assessment.

Over the course of the unit, students will build knowledge around:

World War I history
How to determine author’s tone of a passage
Choices authors make with word choice to develop tone
Poetry and visual text analysis
