Newspaper (News Media)  Syllabus

 

Course Description

This course is designed to maximize a goal-oriented, workshop learning environment.  Students will engage in tasks related to producing a news media website. Students will incorporate journalistic techniques utilized in print, photography, video, audio and digital media.  Although we will use and learn a lot about technology, the class focus will first be journalistic, utilizing technology to support journalism study.

 

  • Students will engage in individual and collaborative assignments.
  • Students will study the rights and responsibilities associated with being part of the scholastic press.
  • Students will create a variety of communications products as class projects to be published on the web.
  • Students will learn to conceptualize, pitch, create, edit, and publish stories to be published on the web.

 

Grading Policy

Students will be expected to be self-motivated and curious.  Projects that are student motivated will be the most successful projects.

 

Story Points / Major assessments: 60%

First nine weeks: tests and major projects.  Subsequent grading periods: Story production tasks.

Quizzes: 20%

This category includes quizzes and formal assessments after the first nine weeks.

Classwork/Homework: 15%

Students will be expected to work outside of class on reporting activities, including but not limited to attending sporting events, performing arts events, scholastic and other events occurring outside of class time.

Participation: 5%

Students are expected to engage in activities that ensure the smooth running of our student-run operation.  Students can earn credit for  work accomplished during SMART lunch.

As part of our ongoing responsibility as the scholastic journalism outlet for Panther Creek High School we will encounter and become engaged in activities and discussions about the following areas.

 

Journalism – standards, ethics, truth and objectivity

Text – writing, editing, factual reporting

Photography – composition, style, content

Video – editing, camera operation

Audio – interviewing, editing
